Moving House Checklist: From Two Weeks Out to Your First Night

Moving House Checklist: From Two Weeks Out to Your First Night

Moving to a new home is far easier when you spread it across days instead of leaving it all to one. This checklist runs in order from two weeks before the move to your first night in the new place. Save it or print it and tick it off step by step.

Two weeks before

  • Book the furniture move, and decide whether you need packing, dismantling and assembly.
  • If you are moving to another city, arrange transport for your car too.
  • Start sorting room by room: what moves, what you donate, what you throw away.
  • Confirm when you get the keys to the new home.
  • Sketch a simple plan of where the furniture goes.

One week before

  • Arrange electricity, water and internet at the new home, and stop or transfer them at the old one.
  • Update your national address with the organisations you deal with.
  • Ask both buildings about the lift and where the truck can park.
  • If you are packing yourself, start with things you do not use every day.
  • Eat what is in the freezer instead of moving it.

The day before

  • Unplug the fridge, clean it and leave it open to dry.
  • Pack a first-day bag: clothes, chargers, medicines, toiletries, documents.
  • Keep jewellery and important documents to carry yourself.
  • Photograph any existing scratches on valuable furniture so you know its condition before the move.

Moving day

  • Walk through the rooms with the crew and point out what stays.
  • Check that every room and cupboard is empty before leaving the old home.
  • Read and photograph the electricity and water meters at the old home.
  • At the new home, direct the crew to each room using your plan.
  • Check the items with the crew before they leave.

Your first night in the new home

Do not try to open every box on the first night. Focus on three things: beds assembled and ready to sleep in, a bathroom and kitchen working at a basic level, and the fridge plugged in after standing for a few hours. The rest comes over the next days, one room a day.

If you would rather someone else did the heavy part, the crew packs, dismantles, moves and assembles within and between cities, and the price shows in the app before you confirm. Read the guide to moving furniture in Riyadh for the details of moving day.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start preparing to move house?

At least two weeks ahead: book the move and start sorting. In busy periods such as the end of the month and before the school year, book earlier.

When should I unplug the fridge?

The day before the move. Clean it and leave it open to dry. At the new home, let it stand for a few hours before switching it on.

What should I carry myself rather than put in the truck?

Important documents, jewellery, medicines and small valuable devices such as a laptop, plus your first-day bag.

Does the crew handle packing and assembly?

Yes. The crew packs, dismantles, loads, moves and then assembles your furniture at the new home.
